Why I Do What I Do, Episode #10

We often ask people to write about WHY I DO WHAT I DO. Virginia Methodists for a New Thing is grateful to the Capital Pride Alliance (CapitalPride.org) for responding to our question!

Through its stewardship of diverse programming and events including year-round LGBTQ+ Pride festivities centered in Washington, DC and the National Capital Region, Capital Pride Alliance serves to celebrate, educate, support, and inspire our multi-faceted LGBTQ+ communities in order to grow and preserve our history and protect our rights for current and future generations.

Sahand, Director of Operations for Capital Pride Alliance, recounts, “I vividly remember attending my first Pride event in Washington, DC and the feeling of belonging and safety that it provided. It's my joy to provide this experience to others in our community.” This organization provides safe, empowering, and uplifting spaces, experiences, and events to the intersectional LGBTQ+ folx of the DC region. They are grateful that several local church groups have generously provided meeting space for volunteers, performance space, refreshments for marchers, and volunteers. If you would like to support their mission, they encourage you to volunteer, to advocate, and to pray!

When we asked what they would specifically like to say to a religious audience like ours who is committed to working for the full inclusion of LGBTQ+ persons, they responded, “In seeking full inclusion, it is important to also recognize that there are people who have multiple marginalized identities within the religious LGBTQ+ community, and the needs and experiences of those groups must be heard and understood. Full inclusion cannot happen without acknowledging the full breadth and depth of the LGBTQ+ experience. So, to those doing this work, keep it up, and let us know how we can support you!” They added, “Thank you for your unconditional love and support for your fellow community members, and for spreading love throughout the world!”

We are grateful for organizations like the Capital Pride Alliance and we appreciate their openness to partner with faith-based organizations in the Washington, DC and National Capital Region. It’s important that all of us reflect upon the question, “Why do I do what I do?” May your reflection lead you to a deeper commitment to full inclusion for all people within our Church.
